E3LS Issues of Synthetic Biology and iGEM projects

This Wiki is the public discussion forum we set up as a follow up possibility for people to comment on our International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) 2008 competition Wiki that dealt with ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social (E3LS) issues attached to synthetic biology and iGEM projects.
We are the first undergraduate student team that presented a project at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition that was exclusively focused on investigating the ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social (E3LS) issues attached to synthetic biology and iGEM projects. http://2008.igem.org/Team:Calgary_Ethics
We believe that a E3LS issue dialog around synbio and iGEM projects is essential as
Synthetic Biology is a quickly advancing and has many local and global implications
The public increasingly expects that they are involved early on
The public expects that all the stakeholders are identified and work together in a collaborative fashion.
The iGEMers/synbio practitioners, have to engage the public and groups who see themselves as impacted by synbio’s vision and products in a proactive way and take concerns seriously
If not… the reactions will be negative and the field will have a hard time to flourish.

This Wiki is now our attempt to discuss further with everyone who wants the work we did for iGEM 2008 and to increase the discourse on the E3LS Issues of iGEM projects and synthetic biology.
i hope the discussion forum will be useful as a follow up to our iGEM Wiki
